The Hitachi EMIEW2 Service Robot

Another Robot For RapidGroove

Back in 2005, Hitachi announced the first in a series of robots that they believe will eventually function as service robots in applications such as care for the elderly. Their EMIEW2 robot is a small, humanoid, white and red robot that's about 31 inches tall and 31 lbs. Part of the design decision to make it small and relatively light was to ensure that it was unlikely to harm anyone if it bumped into or fell on them.

The robot features voice recognition, independent maneuvering (“obstacle evasion technology”), and object recognition and location. It can interact in limited natural language. In demonstrations, it can find objects in a room and can guide users to the items they request.

What applications can you imagine for such a robot? Could it help you in your everyday life? Do you think it could be a help to the homebound?

    1. From what I can see, this robot isn't yet at that point. But that seems like a logical long term possibility. In the short term, simpler tasks like fetching keys and keeping track of appointments or medication schedules seem achievable.
